SEASICKNESS

This is one of those subjects that we don't like to talk about but always comes up. Let me preface this article by saying that this Captain has hurled on some of the finest boats around since I was 5 years old. I will tell you what works for me, and you should listen because I am the "spew king". First of all, please know and have confidence that if you feel the slightest bit uncomfortable, we will leave and fish somewhere else. There are many options and I understand. Although getting sick is very unlikely on the waters that we fish chances are, that if the conditions are right for getting sick, I will be green before you. Note that the majority of the fishing that we do is within sight of land, on protected, calm waters. You will not have a problem here. The problem occurs later on in the season when we have to move to bigger waters, with wave effect or swells.

This is usually during fall fishing. We always talk the night before a charter and discuss current conditions and where we will be fishing. Regardless, if you are prone to getting seasick, I suggest you take the newly reformulated Dramamine. Throw out any older pills you may have and buy new. I have had optimum results with this new formula and can honestly say that I have tried EVERYTHING. If you have confidence with another type of med, then by all means, do it. The new formula doesn't make you as drowsy and you don't ruin you for 48 hours by taking it. Personally, I like to take it the night before, so it helps me get to sleep and wears off at the end of the fishing day. Just remember to set 2 alarms so you make it to the dock on time. This stuff won't work if you take it on the water so be sure to take it at least 2 hours before we shove off. Equally as important, having a little something in your stomach all the time is key. Munching on pretzel rods is ideal when out on the water, I don't leave the dock without them. As a kid, my dad insisted on me munching cantaloupe and triscuit wheat crackers, it worked. Remember, if you are seasick prone it means that you are a highly intelligent person, with an active mind. If you have never been seasick,
well..
