Frequently asked questions:
How many people can go?
There about a dozen kayaks in the fleet at any given time. Some are solo,
some are tandem.
Ideally, we prefer to have at least 6 people on each adventure. And can
accommodate up to 12.
More Kayaks are available, but we need to make plans in advance.
Where are we going to paddle?
We tow our fleet to many destinations around Central New Jersey. The
counties of Monmouth, Middlesex, Ocean and Mercer Counties are our usual
haunts. The majority of the time we are paddling calm and protected
backwaters, which are perfect for beginner paddlers and especially those
interested in relaxation and wildlife.
We have a selection of terrific destinations right here in central New
Jersey. Areas like the Shrewsbury River in Oceanport. The Navesink River in
Red Bank. Manasquan River In Wall Twsp. Sandy Hook Estuary. Raritan River,
Bayshore and tidal creeks. Lawrence Brook in East Brunswick. Deal Lake in
Asbury park and many more streams and small rivers that you didn't even know
existed..
Can I bring my own Kayak?
Yes. Please call discuss this option on the phone in detail.
What equipment does Reel Therapy provide?
Included in the cost of our basic ecotour is; the kayak, paddle, and a LIFE
JACKET. EVERY PARTICIPANT IS REQUIRED TO WEAR A CG APPROVED,TYPE 3 LIFE
JACKET AT ALL TIMES DURING THE TRIP.
How much does it cost?
Our rates start at $45.00 per person (6 paddlers) per 2-3 hour trip. Rates
are adjusted according to the number of paddlers and type of trip. A group
deposit of 50% is required to reserve the date. All trips are on a first
come first serve basis.
What time are we leaving?
Generally speaking, our basic ecotour starts at 9am and run until 12.
Summertime sunset trips are based on the sunset of the given day.
Full moon trips are based on the moon and cloud cover.
Start times are prompt and should be respected. Try to arrive a bit earlier
if at all possible.
Will you show me how to do this?
Before our trip begins, we will give instructions on how to paddle
correctly, and how to be safe, use your kayak, paddle and other equipment.
What do I wear?
We recommend that you dress appropriately for being in the water. Depending
on the season this could mean a bathing suit or splash gear. You will have a
life jacket on, so keep this in mind. Typically, you may get more damp than
wet, wear comfortable clothing that you don't mind roughing it in.
In cooler weather COTTON clothing of any kind is not advised and should be
avoided. We like "wicking" type of clothing (Coolmax) next to the skin and
then a fleece and or windbreaker.
Water spray and dripping can occur. Footwear should be light, submersible,
slip ons or sandals are best. Please bring warm dry clothing to change into
afterwards. Wear a hat, polarized sunglasses, sunscreen and light colored
clothing on hot sunny days. Sunglasses should be polarized so that you can
see fish, crabs, and life underwater. A light pair of golf/batting/workout
gloves are suggested if you are prone to blistering.
Always a good idea to have bug repellant in your gear bag.
What can I bring?
Your curiosity, spirit of adventure and friends with the same mindset. Leave
your cell phone and pager behind. Birdwatchers can bring small spotting
scopes. Photographers can bring cameras that are in water safes. Binoculars
with straps. Plenty of water to keep hydrated during the trip. The guide
will be able to pack items in their kayak as well i.e.: lunch, beverages
etc. Fishing tackle, scuba gear, are reserved for trips designated for that
specific outing. We have Dry bags if you need one.
Can Children Come on the trip?
This is a tough one. As parents ourselves we see this as a great opportunity
for children, we would prefer that children be 14 years or older if they are
going to solo paddle and have the physical ability to keep up with the
fleet. Some of our tandem Kayaks are able to sit a little one with you. This
is to be discussed on an individual basis and some of our destinations would
not be suitable for this. Please ask.
What if the weather's bad?
If severe weather is present or predicted obviously we must cancel the trip.
You will have the opportunity for a full refund or reschedule your trip.
Can I bring Party goods?
Kayaking, alcohol and drugs do not mix. Keep the cooler in your car for when
the trip is over.
What if I don't have anybody to go with?
Although you may feel like you are alone, you aren't. Please feel free to
ask us to arrange a spot for you with others. We have an ongoing rolling
list of solo paddlers that we call/email
to fill trips.
I am a big person, will I fit in the kayak?
The majority of our boats are rated to 300 pounds, but we have a couple of
special boats that we can provide just for you.
